General Educational Development (GED test) is an equivalency test for students to assess their academic proficiency as high school graduates in the United States or Canada. Those who successfully pass the test can obtain a US high school equivalency certificate, which can be used to apply to universities in the United States, Canada or other countries. Since the inception of the test, more than 17,000,000 people have obtained the GED certificate, and 1 in 7 Americans with a high school degree or 1 in 20 students at a U.S. college has ever received a GED certificate. More than 80% of the students have applied to overseas institutions with this qualification. More than 93% of American universities regard GED diploma holders as high school graduates, enjoying the same status as regular high school graduates.
There are over 3,200 official GED testing centers in the United States and Canada. The test can be taken on paper or by computer, but the test taker must be present in person. In total, there are about 25 different versions of the GED exam that are cycled through. Such provisions help control candidates who are at risk of cheating. As with other types of standardized tests, the content of each version of the GED exam is calibrated to the same difficulty level. After the test results are reviewed, those who pass the test will be awarded a "Certificate of High School Diploma" or a credential of a similar name.
